On gender differences in mental rotation processing speed

چکیده
a r t i c l e i n f o There is a wide consensus in the literature that gender differences can be observed in tasks measuring mental rotation ability. A possible explanation of this finding is the presence of gender differences in the processing speed of mental rotation tasks. In two studies, we investigated the dimensionality and the presence of gender differences in mental rotation processing speed in two mental rotation tasks. By applying a joint modeling approach for responses and response times, we found that, in both tasks, mental rotation ability and mental rotation processing speed can be regarded as unidimensional constructs. We replicated previous findings that gender differences in mental rotation ability can be observed in both tasks, although we could not find gender differences in mental rotation processing speed. Our results thus indicate that the observed gender differences in mental rotation ability cannot be explained by gender differences in mental rotation processing speed.

Gender differences in a psychometrical and in a chronometrical mental rotation test and in a standardized math test were investigated with a sample size of 109 boys and girls aged 7 or 8 years. The results revealed gender differences in all accuracy-based measures, i.e., in the paper-pencil mental rotation test, in the math test, and in the error rate of the chronometrical test. In line with th...

Introduction: Many studies have revealed that drug addicted individuals exhibit impaired performance on executive function tests but a few studies have been conducted on executive functions of drug addicts in Iran. To contribute to this understanding, the present study was designed to assess some domains related to executive functions including cognitive flexibility, attention and speed of men...
متن کاملDifferences in cognitive ability and apparent sex differences in corpus callosum size.
Gender differences in brain structure and function have long been an interest to neuroscientists. One region where these differences have been reported is in the band of white matter that connects the two cerebral hemisphere, the corpus callosum. The current study explores the possibility that differences in cognitive ability contribute to the observed gender effects. The focus here is on visuo...

It has been proposed that sexual orientation related differences in cognitive performance are either due to the actions of prenatal factors early in development or the influence of gender role learning. This study examined the performance of 240 healthy, right-handed heterosexual and homosexual males and females (N = 60 per group) on a battery of cognitive tasks comprising mental rotation, judg...
متن کاملReliabilities of Mental Rotation Tasks: Limits to the Assessment of Individual Differences
Mental rotation tasks with objects and body parts as targets are widely used in cognitive neuropsychology. Even though these tasks are well established to study between-groups differences, the reliability on an individual level is largely unknown. We present a systematic study on the internal consistency and test-retest reliability of individual differences in mental rotation tasks comparing di...
